Squealing alternator on arosa tdi?

Recommended Posts

Got a squealing noise which is obviously coming from the alternator region. Also got small flakes of metal around the area. Something obviously wrong but is there an easy way to tell if its the alternator or the tensioner? If it is the alternator is it likely to be the bearings and can you buy them on their own? Other than that the alternator is charging and working as normal.

I'm sure rich will know but they only way to check if it's the tensioner is if the belt is slack? Otherwise it could be your alt. you probably can buy bearings but you can just send it away for an already refurbed one if you preferred.

Just take the belt off, check for play in the pulleys, spin them up and check for rumbles, also I'm sure the alternator pulley is on a cushion drive, so spin it up then grab the pulley to stop it and if the alternator briefly spins afterwards then your alternator pulley is fine, if both stop dead then the pulley is siezed, and you can buy them separately.
