myles983
So I have some confusion as to whether the big ends have actually gone. The new throttle body enables Loopy to start, and she runs, she just sounds really rough like in the video above. My friend thinks its the big end bearings, however, I've shown the video to another mechanic who thinks its the oil tappets or the timing, and a friend at work who is very reputable with cars (builds and races his own rally cars) says it could be due to the fact there is no oil in the engine and the tappets are being noisy. What would be the most feasible way of determining what is actually the issue?
mattarosa
A wooden spoon. And the tappets will be high pitched in comparison to the big ends, they, well, tap. The big ends will clunk Edited September 28, 2016 by mattarosa
myles983
A wooden spoon? To place on different parts of the engine and direct the sound so I can "hear" it better? Right, thank you. I'm picking her up from my friends on Saturday, so I'll post a video up of what it sounds like.

I'm glad you've found it interesting to read. It's certainly been interesting for me Nice little Loop you got there, I prefer your colour to mine to be fair. Although Loopys colour will be changing soon, providing she makes it through this current situation. Cheers. Myles.

myles983
So my friend told me I needed a new throttle body. Bought a new one. Still wont start, even though he told me it was running just noisy (car is currently sat in his garage as hes been "working" on it. Now i come to collect it Saturday, it isn't running! Jc1998: I have soft blue as Matt has said, but I was thinking of going another factory colour for another VW in a wrap, but its a surprise! However, with things the way they are with loopy at the minute, she might not be mine for much longer. Matt: Cheers, just wanted to make sure I understood you xD the abruptness of your comment "wooden spoon" confused me for a little bit
Jc1988
Im thinking about a wrap but undecided on colour.. I wanted white at first but now thinking maybe another blue with white alloys, mine has also not felt right since changing coil pack.. I've done a scan with an obd and get nothing so will prob change spark plugs and ht leads as I want blue ones anyway and see what happens

mattarosa
so what's happening?
myles983
18 hours ago, mattarosa said: so what's happening? I've run the numbers and I'm going to source an engine (same size, just lower mileage) and get that in. I've also found the culprit to the engine failure in the first place i think. When I bought Loopy, the previous owner told me that he'd had problems with the sump, and so had bought a new one and sealed that on. When my "friend" removed the head, there was lots of silicone in the oil. We couldn't understand why, and at the time, I didn't remember what the previous owner had said. The "friend" then cleaned out all visible blobs of silicone, and then removed the block for skimming. Put it back together, tried starting, and hey presto, she starts. And then promptly cuts out again. So I took Loopy to an engine specialist nearby, and he had a look over her and said that the timing was out by one tooth (which would explain why it started up and then died again), and then questioned the silicone as well, as he thinks that the silicone from the sump has been put on excessively and then has run into the engine, into the oil pick up pipe, blocked it, and then caused oil starvation within the engine, causing it to stop running. I didn't notice an increase in temperature when she first stopped running a couple of months ago now, but I did notice a weird clicking noise that could've been related to the increased pressure from my newly fitted CATs from the MOT, which wouldve increased the pressure in the block and then contributed to its demise. So from here: - Source an Engine. - Get Engine fitted. - Check sump for issues (removing silicone, unblocking pick up pipe etc.) - Ensure no more issues before spending anymore money on ancillaries (I have an Indicator Retrofit I'd like to do, the contactless entry, plus some Raspberry Pi intergreation that I'd like to include) All in all its been a costly 3 months, but buying a new car simply just doesn't add up. It makes more sense to plough ahead and continue with Loopy until I have the savings to invest into something all at once. Updates will be slow from here on out, but stay tuned, as as soon as this speedbump has successfully been crawled over, we should be back on track with regular updates and changes.
