  1. And credit crunch, i hate the media! I work for a Mercedes main dealer and we're ok, but one of our rivals 20 miles down the road (where i used to work) are making redundancies and have sold the other half of their business - Smart, Alfa and CJD sales and aftersales, and BMW and MINI servicing - to the Jag/Land Rover/Subaru dealer in town, things looking bleak for them as redundancies are in all departments, with the workshop grinding to a stop by 11ish!
  2. From description alone it sounds like the end bearings, had the big end bearings go on my previous 106 engine, commonly known as a "death rattle", usually from lack of oil in the engine
  3. 2001 '51, not sure on actual reg. date, 66000 miles just over, FSH up till 2006. Bad luck bud, if you read further above the parts are only about £33 and it just involves stripping the dash, depends how competent you feel
  4. I'd believe VW tbh, its in their interest to take on work, they still get paid for doing warranty work, normally at a slightly reduced rate but work is work, maybe they couldn't loacte the fault or their workshop was staffed by a bunch of monkeys! Ref the clutch aching to use, i think the cable slipped/self adjusted on the way home yesterday (felt something move through the clutch pedal) because its now mushy for a lot of the travel then a low biting point, no grinding though!
  5. Hello Steve, I got mine replaced at the wonderful Martins VW in Basingstoke, they also replaced a faulty brake light switch (broken by them i assume) and washed the car for me all FOC. It now aches to drive the car as the clutch is too high for me (6ft 4ish), i initially thought it had no drive at all its that high! My car hadn't been to a main dealer since '06 and has missed 1 service and is shortly due another (66000 miles) but i got them to quote me on a service @ 70K - advised £130-150.00 much cheaper than i thought, but quoted £299-375.00 for a cambelt, is it right its every 4 years as well? Main downside is they diagnosed my engine + epc lights as being due to the crankcase breather and would need a new ECU, £700+ !!!!
  6. I'm in the trade and know the way Mercedes goodwill works so maybe that helps, but i spoke to a lovely helpful girl so maybe that also helped the cause, certainly a lot more helpful than *ahem* Ridgeway VW in Newbury. I'll let you know the name when i've had mine sorted - don't want to jinx it! - its booked next Friday:D Chris

    Hello

Hey there, I'm Chris, 25, from Basingstoke and drive a black Lupo 1.4S that's seen better days but i still love it to bits most of the time!! Found the site when looking for possible causes to the latest problem! Chris
  8. Thank you very much for this thread, my car (well my fiancee's) is suffering all the symptoms described, and gets a bit worse when warm, handily i work for a Mercedes garage and hopefully we're going to have a look later and then try goodwill if needs be @ the local dealer, if no luck then the one in my hoemtown as i commute EDIT: small update, spoken to the dealer local to work and they said they have heard of it but mainly on the Polo, and have advised 1 hours labour to investigate if not done under goodwill - £87.50 +vat If the parts only £33 ish its a bit of a risk as to which way to go financially 2nd EDIT: spoke to the dealer in my home town and she asked me to leave it with her, then got back to me about 2 hours later and said there was 100% goodwill and i could even borrow a courtesy car while mines in with them!
