  1. @LucyP It's not that we're unfriendly or unhelpful, it's just that over the years, we've seen this many many times before. So we're actually trying to help people not have a hard time. It's all about enjoying your little vdub- it's why people buy them instead of Vauxhalls, Fords or Toyotas... Many people start a project and usually it ends up stuck (unfinished) because they either can't get a specific part, get something fabricated at a reasonable cost or just can't crack how to match up their ECU with their new loom or something. Rebuilding a classic car is not generally for the faint hearted. The gti is known to be one of the more difficult ones because of few genuine vdub parts available or a lack of wrecks to salvage bits from. It's also why there's a lucrative Jap import trade in Gtis. @Rich has a few parts, but not many. There is (was) a white gti in a southampton breakers a couple of months back. A breaker in Thame also has a few gti spares. In all seriousness, please prove us all wrong by starting a build thread and make us all eat humble pie. You'll have seriously earned your respect on here once done and - yes - be the envy of many of us, me included
  2. Welcome! Nice motor. Good colour. Approved ✔️

    GTI Upgrades

Don't get me started on ECP bits. I AM FED UP WITH REPLACING EURO CAR PARTS BITS THAT FAIL IN UNDER 18 MONTHS THAT I PREVIOUSLY FITTED. Everyone, please do not buy any ECP bits, unless they are a branded product. Just don't. Yesterday I replaced a ECP brand steering rack inner ball joint on a Polo that I had fitted only 13 months ago. 14k miles. Such a lot of work for so little reward. OMG. Not happy.
  4. @Rich if the bush had gone, wouldn't it mainly affect 1 and 3 (left to right swivel), as in and out would still be fine (up and down on the tower). But what do I know. That stupid plastic locking peg always bugs me. I still reckon the clutch noise is a shot releaser though.
  5. Has anyone done a rebuild cost analysis on this car? The magnesium tailgate and whole ali front end bits would come in at at least £1.5k. Add to that all the plastic and lights, maybe another 1k. Then you'll heed a decent paint job adding maybe another £750. So already the finished car owes you about £4k, not taking into account all the work hours (you could have earned £££ working). Maybe 75h (two weeks of salary). A decent much lower milage Gti sold on here the other day for £3.5k, so on the face of it, this is a loss maker. Plus it has an insurance claim/mark against it which will reduce it's resale value even further. I'd break it for parts if bought for about £1k, but i think i'd only break even at that price. Wheels/interior/doors/interior fittings/engine and box (although high milage)/exhaust/dash/glazing/wiring bits/clips/lights.... And about 20h of labour. So I'd need to get back about £1400 if bought for 1k.
  6. It could also be that the slave cylinder is faulty or needs bleeding (it's a hydraulic clutch on a tdi). If the clutch doesn't fully disengage when changung gear, shifts can require more stick effort, which like @weslangdon says can cause the syncros to wear. Usually the little teeth on the brass ring become rounded off- easy fix/swap, but gearbox needs to be opened up to do it. Same gearbox as the tdi 9N polo if that helps...

    My new car

Very nice! We should all have a club meet this year if the opportunity arises... Everyone is meeting up one to one, but it'd be awesome comparing dents and scratches!
  8. Herzlich willkommen zum club lupo! Very nice Lupo! Is it street registered? I like the instrument cluster. Nice!
  9. Good for parts... Shame. Looks like it was in mint condition. You'd need another donor car for all the broken body panels. Vdub don't sell them anymore.
  10. Yeah 100% right... You'll need a new clutch bearing, and clutch while you're at it even though it probably doesn't need one with just 61k. Worth bleeding the master cylinder before you take it somewhere. New gearbox fluid too...
  11. Ride height... If the rear is lowered a bit, the back wheels go backward extending the static wheelbase. And vice-versa. Disregard, as they're the exact same car platform and approval type. There's a how-to or something on here to set up the front suspension on Lupos/Arosa
  12. When i get a new used car, i always change all the fluids (incl gearbox/brake/coolant), belts, filters and the thermostat. Worth it just for peace of mind so you know it's going to be reliable. An extra £50 is worth it to save a future breakdown taxi fee or tow home. Your model's weakness is plug leads, coil pack and engine sensors - all of which are relatively cheap and easy to replace and simply fail because of their age. You could swap them too if everything is original from new.
  13. @Lupo_Gti_Kor, you need to find something from Korea (something it is not possible to buy in the UK). If you can find an old broken mk2 golf, maybe @Rich will want a small part from that!
  14. Sounds like a normal 1L... Might be worth an oil and filter change if the tappets are sticking. Google how they work. A true wonder of engine technology Usually a hot engine flushes out any gummy residue, so check your temp gauge. Sticky thermostat...? And welcome to club lupo!
  15. Never worked on one, but my guess is that there might be an interlock with the steering key lock? Maybe they need aligning before reassembly- with key in ign on, or run? Other automatic vdubs of that era all have some weird mech that causes headaches...
  16. Get those rear arches sorted as soon as... Within 300mm of a suspension component (MOT). And looking nice! No dents or scuffs anywhere. Shiny.
  17. Ask him to re-post the info or a new link. He's on here just about daily.
  18. Yeah, i gotta agree with @Rich. The fact that it sold in under 24h shows the price should have been higher. It should take about 1-2 weeks to sell a car. Longer, your price is too high; quicker, too low. But hey, if both parties are happy, then job done 👍🏻 I sold my mk4 a few months back. In under 24h. I told people I still had it as the person who was going to buy (deposit taken), said they couldn't collect it till the weekend. People were offering me double the asking without even seeing it. Mad. Yup, I could've doubled my takings I reckon. Damn! But I was pleased to get rid TBH.
  19. You can remove the entire mech/rail clamp bolts, so everything drops down together. There's a "how-to".
  20. ¿Qué tal? Lo mismo como muchos... Tendrás que buscar por todas partes, porque son difíciles de encontrar ... ¿Dónde estás? ¿tienes fotos? Bienvenido a Club Lupo!
  21. @MikeOggie I budget £500 a year maintenance money. That includes repairs, all parts and regular servicing. And me doing the labour. Soooo, depends how much you value it. I'm yet to fix the rear arches on one of my Lupos, but have stopped the rot worsening by waxoyling till I get a moment. Already have the paint. But I find if I keep on top of all the little bits and bobs, the overall result is good and the car stays mint. You know, even things like upholstery (which I get from German breakers yards). The worst is usually the subframes and suspension components which rust very well. I've only seen pics of the Tim and Tom fabric. Interesting theme... And yes, very rare- was special factory order only I believe. Pics please! oh, and welcome to Club Lupo!
