Hi the saga goes on. Put new used throttle body in and car and it started but will only idle. Had vcds from local member (THANKS VERY VERY MUCH !!) errors 17989 and 17950 now (error 17950 only before replacing throttle body) but could not do a realignment as the errors always there even after clearing them. So suspect wiring or fuses etc. Just tested all the fuses above parcel shelf with multimeter all ok BUT noticed one of the "spare" fuse slots had both electrical connectors in place where the other spare slots either have only one and most none. So wondering if a fuse has fallen out? The slot is no 16 "central electrics". Everything seems to work on car so unlikely but cannot find out if there should be a fuse or not in slot 16. Its a Lupo 1.4 s petrol 2003 BBY engine Cheers Rick

VW LUPO ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS CODES 17950 & 17978 HELP
rickb replied to rickb's topic in Volkswagen Lupo
HI AGAIN I decided to buy a cheap replacement throttle body to see if the car would start and so illiminate the immobiliser or ecu which was my best guess. Bought one, fitted it and car started and ran very rough. Cleaned replacement but old throttle body and tried again a few times and it idles at about 1200 rpm but will not really increase revs when using throttle pedal. Now get error codes 17989 and 17950 which suggests need to do a new basic setting of throttle body but dont have the kit Anyone got the kit for this or can advise how to do it. I am in bagshot surrey m3 junction 3 Thanks -
VW LUPO ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS CODES 17950 & 17978 HELP
rickb replied to rickb's topic in Volkswagen Lupo
hi thanks have tried both the keys I have which show exactly same problems -
Hi Have listed this in other model specific Lupo forum but realise it should be here My Lupo died at TL. Battery flat because of car lights and trying to start. disconnected and recharged battery, left terminals touching 24hrs. Errors 17950 throttle body & 17978 immobiliser. Taken air filter off, checked wiring connections (a little), fully recharged battery again now ONLY 17950 throttle body error code BUT car still always starts and immediately stops. Can the throttle body error cause immobiliser to kick in as it seems this is why the car stops. Thinking of either cleaning throttle body (never done) and/or replacing ( it as quick solution) ANY ideas and or friendly vagcom owner to local Bagshot Surrey. Help Rick

VW LUPO ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS CODES 17950 & 17978 HELP
rickb replied to rickb's topic in Volkswagen Lupo
hi thanks for info. could the throttle body problem cause the immobiliser problem or vice versa? thinking of just replacing throttle body and seeing what happens -
HI Just got one of the code readers and came up with two engine faults 17950 17978 Unfortunately both are not in the supplied code reference list so no idea what they are Anyone know what they mean The problem is engine died at traffic lights. Then would not start till battery flat, recharged battery now starts but immediately stops. IMMOBILISER??? Both keys I have show same symton, have checked all fuses. Thanks

HI Lupo 2003 1.4s petrol. Died at traffic lights. RAC towed me home. Recharged battery now starts and stops immediately which everywhere says is immobiliser. Have two keys both same. Tried many tricks eg touching + and - terminal, leaving key in for 10 minutes etc. Can anyone tell me best way to fix and also where the immobiliser is located and anyone got a vag com to read error codes near bagshot surrey Thanks Rick

Hi I had the same problem of heavy clutch that squeaked. Took to dealer in camberley and they said it was pedal box and new clutch only £1500!!!! I said do pedal box and the we will see about the clutch. After a lot of hassle with VW senior management it was agreed that I would pay £130 towards costs of £400 to replace pedal box which they did. Squeak went, heavy clutch went and new clutch not required!!

rickb replied to rickb's topic in Car Care, Maintenance and Mechanical
Hi Managed to persuade VW to overturn rejected claim to pay for all parts and 50% of labour so cost to me know £154 not £400. When car is fixed tomorrow I will try for the rest - its all their design fault so they should
