Hi there, I put some lights on my boot on my little bug. You can find the wire under the rear right pocket. It's the easiest way to connect to the switch wiring. If you have a gti than you have the battery positioned in the boot. Am i right? In this case it's simple to get a +12V to get the light on. To find the colour of the wire that gives a "-" when you open the boot just take off the plastic that covers the inner side of the boot. You have to unscrew two screws. On the connector that enters the switch you have 2 wires : a brown wire and a brown/yellow(i belive). That brown/"something" is the wire you need. This wire goes in to the dashboard clusters all the way from back to front. So ... you find it very easy under that pocket i told you about earlier. Take care how you position the light. The safety belt for the rear seats are installed beside the side plastic of the boot. I made some holes on my car and i was very happy yo see that my light hits the safety belts. I had the same problem on my car. On a friday evening the smoke appeared again and was the end for the high beam switch form the stalk. Than i decided to take the steering wheel down to see what the problem was. The wipers stalk touched the steering column metal. And so the short-circuti appeared. It was a short-circuit made between two pins of the signal stalk also. I took them from a MK3 golf ... works perfectly. I will attach two pictures for you to see better. Inerior of the wiper stalk. You can see the burned plastic that made the smell and the smoke : Lateral of the signals stalk : P.S. when the smoked appeared the fuse from the wipers was breaking.
